Managing the mental health epidemic.
As we navigate the third year of the pandemic, individuals, families, organisations, and communities are learning to live with the virus that has changed our social, economic, and physical status. The impacts of this pandemic have had severe and far-reaching repercussions which extend beyond the physical. A recent report by the World Health Organization highlighting the significant increase worldwide of mental health conditions, and the ongoing affects caused by separation, isolation, loss of livelihoods, and loss of loved ones.
In addition to those triggers, recent national and international reports have highlighted the growing concern around Long Covid, and the significant impacts to individual health, both physically and mentally, and the potential for longer term workforce participation challenges.
Nationally, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reported the following statistics related to September 2022 data (most recently released data), compared to the same time in 2019.
· MBS-subsidised mental health-related services had increased by 11%
· Calls to Lifeline were up 19%
· Calls to Beyond Blue were up 26%
· Prevalence of long covid cases in Australia is approximately 10%
What this means for 2023 Executive teams......
All levels of business management including Boards must acknowledge any degrading of its people’s mental health as a potential business threat, and therefore provide support within their working environment. Key areas to consider include:
· Workplace flexibility (hybrid work policy is a key driver to work-life balance)
· Return to work plans (including altering duties to suit capabilities, roles, and responsibilities)
· Review of policies, awards, and conditions (in support of employee wellbeing)
· Workplace support groups or links to external providers (Employee Assistance Programs or Support networks)
The mental health of people should be central to every workplace, as it lends itself to a culture of supportive productivity and an environment in which everyone is enabled and valued. As we emerge from this pandemic, we must recognise the shift in social expectations and identify and plan for what many are phrasing a mental health epidemic.
